NUFC Ball Boy

Ryan Coates’ Story

Although Ryan lives hundreds of miles away, his heart remains in the North East and particularly with his beloved Newcastle United. According to his Grandmother Irene, Ryan could kick a ball before he could walk.

Following his move South nearly 5 years ago, Ryan has returned every summer to visit his grandparents Irene and Alan Coates at their home in Allanville and also visit his old friends.

However, his 2006 summer holiday was to be particularly memorable. Unknown to Ryan his grandparents had arranged for him to be a ball boy at St James Park on Saturday the 19th August 2006 and the visitors were Wigan Athletic.

The incessant rain did not dampen Ryan’s excitement as he was near the home team’s goal during the warm up session, retrieving the ball for his heroes. Fortunately, during the match Ryan was placed next to the dug outs and he was delighted when team manager Glen Roeder spoke to him.

Newcastle United won the match 2-1 and Ryan proved to be a good luck charm. It was evident from the expression on Ryan’s face that he had a wonderful and memorable day.

On behalf of Ryan and his mother, a huge thank you to Newcastle United Football Club for organising a special day.
