Fryers Terrace was an area of derelict land located in the center of the village,  adjoining and opposite the land was abandoned retail properties which in previous generations were contributors to a vibrant and prosperous commercial sector in the village.

It was the view of the members of the Burradon & Camperdown Forum(“The Forum”) that the reclamation and development of Fryers Terrace was an important component of the community’s effort to regenerate the village.

The Forum negotiated the compulsory purchase of the land and secured a grant of £150,00 from Natural England and North Tyneside Council to redevelop the land and create a village green and community amenity for local residents.

Northern Environmental Architects were appointed to draft plans for the site and manage the project on behalf of the Trustees. John Hellens Contractors Limited was selected to construct the Millennium Green which included a mosaic and perimeter fence designed by local children. The construction commenced on 25 September 2001 and was completed on 4 December 2001 which constituted a record for the completion of a Millennium Green.

Rt Hon Stephen Byers MP conducted the official opening of the green on 8 December 2001.
